What on Earth are Hull Pillows?

by Phoenix Delray

If you are someone who is under the assumption that hull pillows are cushions for the bottom of a boat, youd better read further! If you are searching for a new pillow either for your bed, for your travels or for your neck, you are in luck you will find some good information all over the Internet about all kinds of pillows and cushions that are supposed to work wonders for the alignment of your head, neck and spine as well as for your quality of sleep every night. So, what are hull pillows?

The hull has nothing to do with where these pillows are used it describes the filling for a specific kind of pillow. Buckwheat hulls and millet hulls are two of the different types of materials that many people are getting a better nights sleep with. This material is made up of the shells, if you will, of buckwheat and millet seeds. Although with just that information they may not sound very comfortable to sleep on, they are very tiny and hull pillows might contain hundreds or thousands of them.

So what makes them so comfy for so many people? Just about every filling currently on the market will lose its shape and support ability after a certain amount of time; the average pillow really only maintains its level of support for a few months, and then many of us are back out a few times a year to purchase a new one. Instead, one of these hull pillows can last about 7 years before it has to be refilled with more hulls. Since they are also a harder material, they are not quick to lose their shape. Even after seven or so years, it does not have to be thrown away it just needs some more hulls added to it to get back that support that the pillow originally offered.

Another reason that many people like them is because they are considered to be hypoallergenic when good quality hulls are properly rinsed and dried out before being assembled into hull pillows. This is because under these conditions, they really are 99.9% dust free. This means that people who are allergic to the large amount of dust that is found in traditional pillows can rest easier (and breathe easier, literally) with hull pillows. Even if people do not suffer from hay fever or allergies, everyone will rest easy knowing that without dust, there are also no nasty little dust mite bugs in hull pillows, either!
