Japanese Pottery

by G. Savage

Asian pottery is often associated with providing a unique and colorful decor addition to any surrounding. Opting for a brilliantly crafted ceramic-ware made by skilled potters is an excellent method of providing an exceptionally themed landscape to give your room or office an oriental touch. Ancient societies often used Asian pottery as a decoration piece. Pottery is one of the oldest known art forms exclusively designed for decoration. The most common materials used to create Asian pottery pieces are stoneware, earth-ware, and porcelain.

How are they made?

Asian pottery techniques are actually rather fascinating. The main process is to form a clay body into beautiful shapes by heating them in a kiln in order to create the final outcome of shape. This process hardens the final shape desired for any particular piece. From this point, Asian pottery items are beautifully decorated with vibrant colors normally comprised of water-color or oil based paints. In many cases, the artist provides a touch of their unique flare for art and decoration while no two pieces are identical in decoration design. A wide variation of clays is used by pottery creators that are usually specific to their local geography. Minerals and clay are mixed to produce clay bodies suited to provide a form of preservation and durability to each Asian pottery piece.

Historic uses

Originally crafted for domestic purposes primarily to hold water. The crafting and designing of pottery is not necessarily exclusive to Asia. Many cultures dating back to prehistoric times created and designed pottery pieces to reflect varying usages and norms of their particular society. Remnants of ancient pottery are found in many countries through which scientists and researchers have used these pieces to track and trace prehistoric societies. Prehistoric pieces of pottery were created in varying forms and shapes including round, oval, and even symmetrical. The most common forms of pottery are bowls, vases, and cups.

Methods used to create

Asian pottery artists employ a wide range of methods to shape and design their pieces. Hand craftsmanship is the most individualized and direct method of designing individual pieces. The potter's wheel is yet another common method that is performed with a ball of clay placed in the middle of a wheel-head that is rotated with a stick. The result is a solid ball of soft clay that is then gently formed into a hollow shape. As a result, a wide range of stunning pottery designs is available in the market-place which varies in price. One of the most popular methods of purchasing beautiful Asian pottery is through the internet. Many reputed and authentic Asian pottery online stores offer their pottery pieces at highly competitive prices.
